Target Information
Glycophorin C (GYPC) is an integral membrane glycoprotein found in human erythrocytes. It plays a key role in maintaining red cell mechanical stability. Several GYPC mutations have been identified:
- Gerbich and Yus phenotypes: due to deletion of exon 3 and 2, respectively
- Webb and Duch antigens (glycophorin D): result from single point mutations in the GYPC gene
- GYPC has minimal homology with glycophorins A and B.
