Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) gene family. These enzymes regulate the unsaturation of fatty acids by introducing double bonds between specific carbons of the fatty acyl chain.
FADS family members are fusion proteins composed of an N-terminal cytochrome b5-like domain and a C-terminal membrane-spanning desaturase region, both containing conserved histidine motifs.
This gene is clustered with FADS1 and FADS2 on chromosome 11q12–q13.1, a region thought to have evolved through gene duplication due to similar exon/intron organization.
