Target Information
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) beta is the beta chain of hCG, a 40 kDa glycoprotein hormone produced by trophoblastic cells of the placenta beginning 10–12 days after conception. hCG consists of alpha and beta subunits that are non-covalently associated.
The alpha subunit is similar to those found in pituitary hormones (FSH, LH, TSH), while the beta subunit confers biological specificity.
hCG supports fetal maintenance during early pregnancy by stimulating progesterone production in the corpus luteum.
hCG levels are low in non-pregnant individuals but increase sharply during pregnancy.
Diseases associated with hCG dysfunction include gestational trophoblastic tumor and hydatidiform mole.
