Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on many cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes. B2M is also present in free form in plasma. Its amino acid sequence is homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions, forming a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure.
The protein is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream pathways in naive CD8+ cells. The B2M gene is located on chromosome 15. Mutations can cause hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Beta-2-microglobulin levels are used as a renal function marker in kidney transplant recipients and as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
