The protein encoded by the GSS gene functions as a homodimer to catalyze the ATP-dependent conversion of gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine to glutathione, the second step of glutathione biosynthesis.
Defects in this gene can lead to glutathione synthetase deficiency.
