Target Information

The SERPINB6 protein belongs to the serpin superfamily and the ovalbumin-serpin subfamily. It was initially identified as a placental thrombin inhibitor.
In mice, homolog expression is found in inner ear hair cells. Mutations in this gene are linked to nonsyndromic progressive hearing loss, indicating its role in protecting inner ear cells from lysosomal leakage during stress.
Loss of this protection may lead to cell death and sensorineural hearing loss.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants are known for this gene.
