Target Information
This gene belongs to the secretory phospholipase A2 family and is located in a cluster of related genes on chromosome 1. The encoded enzyme hydrolyzes membrane phospholipids to generate lysophospholipids and free fatty acids such as arachidonic acid. It preferentially acts on linoleoyl-containing phosphatidylcholine substrates. The enzyme’s secretion is believed to induce inflammatory responses in neighboring cells. Alternative splicing variants exist, though their full-length forms are not fully characterized.
