Target Information
This gene encodes a protein belonging to the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family. Sequential activation of caspases plays a central role in the execution phase of apoptosis. Caspases exist as inactive proenzymes composed of a prodomain and large and small protease subunits. Activation requires proteolytic processing at conserved internal aspartic residues to generate a heterodimeric enzyme. Caspase 4 can cleave and activate its own precursor and that of caspase 1. Overexpression induces apoptosis. Alternative splicing results in distinct isoforms.
