Target Information
Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) transfers high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine, and belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family. It exists as two isoenzymes—sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK—encoded by separate genes. MtCK forms both dimers and octamers, unlike cytosolic creatine kinase which forms only dimers. Overexpression of ubiquitous MtCK has been observed in malignant cancers with poor prognosis, possibly due to high energy turnover and impaired apoptosis. Two genes on chromosome 15 encode identical mitochondrial creatine kinase proteins with approximately 80% homology between sarcomeric and ubiquitous forms.
