Aromatase는 cytochrome P450 superfamily에 속하는 효소로, 약물 대사 및 콜레스테롤, 스테로이드, 기타 지질의 생합성에 관여하는 monooxygenase입니다. 이 단백질은 소포체에 위치하며, 안드로겐의 A ring에 대한 세 번의 연속적인 수산화 반응을 촉매하여 에스트로겐 생합성의 마지막 단계를 담당합니다. 유전자 변이는 aromatase 활성을 증가 또는 감소시킬 수 있으며, 이는 에스트로겐이 성호르몬뿐 아니라 성장 및 분화에도 관여함을 시사합니다. 이 유전자는 두 가지 전사체 변형체를 발현합니다.
