Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (GPXs) are ubiquitously expressed enzymes that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. Multiple isoforms exist, differing in structure and localization:
- GPX1 (cGPx): Cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme, first discovered member of the GPX family.
- GPX2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in the gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPX3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma enzyme mainly expressed by the kidney.
- GPX4 (PH-GPx): Reduces hydroperoxides in membranes and lipoproteins.
- Other isoforms include cysteine-containing GPX3 and epididymis-specific GPX5.
