Target Information

Inwardly rectifying potassium channels (Kir) are involved in electrical signaling in the nervous system. Unlike depolarization-activated channels, these channels preferentially allow potassium ions to flow into the cell, contributing to the excitability of muscle cells and neurons.
The KCNJ4 gene encodes an integral membrane protein belonging to the inward rectifier potassium channel family, characterized by relatively small unitary conductance. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
