Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin and desmin are expressed during early cellular development, later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal changes, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroidogenesis.
