Target Information
Albumin is a soluble, monomeric protein with a molecular weight of approximately 65–67 kDa that constitutes about half of the blood serum protein. Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most abundant protein in human plasma, with a serum half-life of about 20 days. It functions primarily as a carrier protein for steroids, fatty acids, and thyroid hormones, and helps stabilize extracellular fluid volume.
Albumin is a globular, unglycosylated serum protein synthesized in the liver as pre-pro-albumin, which undergoes cleavage before secretion. It exhibits strong binding capacity for water, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, fatty acids, hormones, bilirubin, and drugs. The main physiological role of albumin is to regulate the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood.
