Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) encoded by single-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate G protein–dependent signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific.
