Target Information
SLC46A1 acts as an intestinal proton-coupled high-affinity folate transporter and an intestinal heme transporter, mediating heme uptake from the gut lumen into duodenal epithelial cells. The iron released from heme may then be transported into the bloodstream. Dietary heme iron is an important nutritional source of iron. This protein shows higher affinity for folate than heme.
