Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of the vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose their nuclei during development, and crystallins remain stable throughout life. Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families.
Beta-crystallins, the most heterogeneous, differ by the presence of a C-terminal extension. They can self-associate to form dimers or heterodimers with other beta-crystallins.
The CRYBB2 gene, a beta basic group member, is part of a gene cluster with beta-A4, beta-B1, and beta-B3. A chain-terminating mutation in this gene is associated with type 2 cerulean cataracts.
