Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which is absent in mammalian mitoribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, making homology-based identification challenging. MRPL55 encodes a 39S subunit protein, and multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms have been identified.
