Target Information
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by addition of the telomere repeat TTAGGG. The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity and an RNA component serving as a template for the telomere repeat. Telomerase expression plays a key role in cellular senescence and oncogenesis, being normally repressed in postnatal somatic cells. Studies suggest telomerase may also participate in chromosomal repair. Multiple alternatively spliced variants of TERT have been identified, though some full-length sequences remain undetermined.
