Target Information
Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA virus belonging to the family Reoviridae. Five species (A–E) cause disease in animals, with species A being the most common in humans.
Within rotavirus A, different strains (serotypes) are classified based on two surface proteins.
The virus contains six structural proteins (VPs) forming the virion and six non-structural proteins (NSPs) expressed in infected cells.
Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhoea among infants and young children, often presenting with vomiting, watery diarrhoea, and low-grade fever.
Despite being preventable, rotavirus gastroenteritis still leads to hundreds of thousands of deaths annually in developing countries.
