Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family proteins act as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, generating a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane and resulting in water production. The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer composed of 13 subunits, both mitochondrial and nuclear. COX5 is a heme A-containing chain converting oxygen and hydrogen into water. Two isoforms exist: COX5a (aerobic) and COX5b (hypoxic). COX5a is upregulated under high oxygen, while COX5b increases under low oxygen to maximize COX apoenzyme turnover.
