Target Information
Peroxiredoxin (Prx) is a growing peroxidase family associated with cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Mammalian Prx proteins (approximately 50 isoforms) share homology in amino acid sequence and contain active site cysteine residues with thiol-specific antioxidant activity. Mammalian Prxs include six members classified as typical 2-Cys, atypical 2-Cys, and 1-Cys Prx. Except for Prx VI (1-Cys subgroup), the remaining five 2-Cys Prx isoforms exhibit thioredoxin-dependent peroxidase (TPx) activity utilizing thioredoxin, thioredoxin reductase, and NADPH as a reducing system. Mammalian Prxs (20–30 kDa) vary in subcellular localization: Prx I, II, and VI in cytosol; Prx III in mitochondria; Prx IV in ER and secretion; Prx V in peroxisome, mitochondria, and cytosol.
