Target Information
Prosomatostatin (pro-SS) is a peptide of 92 amino acids containing somatostatin (SS) 1-28 and SS 1-14 at the C terminus [PMID: 2567292].
Somatostatin exists in 14 aa and 28 aa active forms produced by alternate cleavage of a single preproprotein.
It is expressed throughout the body and inhibits the release of multiple secondary hormones by binding to G-protein-coupled somatostatin receptors.
Somatostatin regulates endocrine functions through interactions with pituitary growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and gastrointestinal hormones, and also affects neurotransmission and cell proliferation.
