Target Information
The galectins are a family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins implicated in modulating cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Differential and in situ hybridizations indicate that this lectin is specifically expressed in keratinocytes. It is expressed at all stages of epidermal differentiation (basal and suprabasal layers) and mainly found in stratified squamous epithelium. The protein is moderately repressed by retinoic acid. The antigen localizes to basal keratinocytes and lower levels in suprabasal layers, concentrating at areas of cell-to-cell contact. This localization and down-regulation in cultured keratinocytes suggest a role in cell-cell and/or cell-matrix interactions essential for normal growth control.
