Target Information

AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal development. In adults, AFP expression is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence may occur without pathology. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin, with both genes located in tandem on chromosome 4. It exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. Elevated AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly, while high serum AFP is linked to hepatocellular carcinoma, teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
