Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP5 (SLC39A5) is a member of the family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is essential for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP5 is closely related to ZIP4 and is found in tissues such as intestine, pancreas, liver, and kidney. Unlike ZIP4, ZIP5 localizes to the basolateral membrane in kidney cells and is not downregulated by zinc repletion. Evidence suggests reciprocal regulation between ZIP4 and ZIP5, where ZIP5 mRNA translation decreases and ZIP5 protein is rapidly internalized and degraded under zinc deficiency.
