Brevican은 성인 뇌의 세포외기질에서 가장 풍부한 콘드로이틴 황산 프로테오글리칸으로, lectican 계열에 속하는 단백질입니다. 중추신경계에서 높은 발현을 보이며 시냅스 안정화 및 신경 가소성 억제에 관여합니다. Astrocyte와 neuron에서 분비되며, 145 kD core protein 형태로 최대 3개의 CS chain을 포함하거나 CS chain이 없는 형태로 존재합니다. ADAMTS에 의해 절단될 경우, 고유한 C말단 epitope EAMESE를 포함하는 55 kD N-terminal fragment를 형성합니다.
