Target Information

Damage-Regulated Autophagy Modulator (DRAM) is a p53 target gene encoding a lysosomal protein that induces autophagy, a process that degrades cytosolic proteins and organelles. Activation of DRAM by p53 occurs alongside proapoptotic genes such as PUMA and Bax, and these pathways together promote a full cell death response. DRAM alone cannot induce apoptosis, but its inactivation in certain cancers highlights its importance and suggests a significant role of autophagy in cancer biology. At least two isoforms of DRAM are known to exist.
