Target Information
Calpain proteinases are papain-like neutral proteases activated by calcium. Calpains 1 and 2 consist of a large proteolytically active subunit and a small enhancer subunit (calpain-4). Other members (calpain 5–15) do not require a small subunit.
Calpain-7 features domain-N instead of the typical EF-hand calcium-binding domain, suggesting unclear calcium regulation. This domain resembles domain-III with unknown function. Calpain-7 is widely distributed across various tissues.
