POU5F1 (also known as Oct-4)는 초기 발생 단계에서 최초로 보고된 모계 발현 옥타머 결합 단백질로, 배아 발달 과정에서 중요한 전사 인자입니다. 이 단백질은 줄기세포 생성 및 세포 대체 치료 연구에 활용될 수 있습니다.
POU5F1, Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, c-Myc 등의 전사 인자를 발현시켜 인공적으로 유도된 다능성 줄기세포(iPS 세포)를 생성할 수 있으며, 최근에는 바이러스 도입 없이 플라스미드 발현 시스템으로도 iPS 세포를 제작할 수 있음이 보고되었습니다.
