Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, complicating recognition by sequence homology.
This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, more than twice the size of its E. coli counterpart. Sequence analysis identified two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
