Target Information

Ethinyl Estradiol is a semisynthetic alkylated estradiol with a 17-alpha-ethinyl substitution. It exhibits high estrogenic potency when administered orally and is commonly used as the estrogenic component in oral contraceptives. Ethinyl estradiol binds to the estrogen receptor complex and activates transcription of estrogen-responsive genes. It also inhibits 5-alpha reductase in epididymal tissue, lowering testosterone levels and potentially delaying progression of prostatic cancer. Additionally, it has protective effects against osteoporosis and may provide long-term protection against breast cancer in animal models, mimicking the antitumor effects of pregnancy.
