Target Information
NEEP21 (neuron-enriched endosomal 21kDa protein), also known as NSG1, is a single-pass type II membrane protein of the NSG family.
It is highly expressed during neuronal maturation and downregulated in adult tissues.
NEEP21 localizes to Rab4-positive early endosomes in neurons and is essential for receptor sorting and recycling.
It interacts with GRIP1 and GluR-2, mediating GluR-2 surface expression. Disruption of this interaction causes GluR-2 accumulation in early endosomes and alters synaptic current properties.
NEEP21 also forms complexes with Syntaxin 13 and participates in recycling of transferrin receptors (TFRs) and neurotensin receptor 2 (NTR2).
