Background
Adducins are a family of cytoskeletal proteins encoded by three genes (alpha, beta, gamma). They form heterodimeric structures composed of related subunits with similar architecture. Alpha- and beta-adducin contain a protease-resistant N-terminal region and a hydrophilic C-terminal region. Alpha- and gamma-adducins are ubiquitously expressed, whereas beta-adducin is highly expressed in brain and hematopoietic tissues. Adducin binds strongly to Ca(2+)/calmodulin and is a substrate for protein kinases A and C. Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms, though not all have been fully characterized.
