Background
This locus encodes a member of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor family of proteins. These proteins form pentameric complexes composed of both alpha and beta subunits. The encoded alpha-type subunit contains characteristic adjacent cysteine residues and functions as a ligand-gated ion channel involved in neurotransmission. Polymorphisms in this gene are associated with an increased risk of smoking initiation and susceptibility to lung cancer. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
