Background
The ABCB7 gene encodes a membrane-associated protein belonging to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. These transporters move various molecules across cellular membranes and are classified into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). ABCB7 is part of the MDR/TAP subfamily, which is linked to multidrug resistance and antigen presentation. This half-transporter participates in heme transport from mitochondria to the cytosol and may regulate metal homeostasis. Mutations in ABCB7 are associated with mitochondrial iron accumulation, isodicentric (X)(q13), and sideroblastic anemia. Alternatively spliced variants encoding multiple isoforms have been identified.
