Background
This gene encodes a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. This kinase functions as a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase)-activated protein kinase. MAP kinases act as integration points for multiple biochemical signals. The kinase is activated by growth inducers and cellular stress stimulation. In vitro studies show that ERK, p38 MAP kinase, and Jun N-terminal kinase can phosphorylate and activate this kinase, suggesting its role as an integrative element in both mitogen and stress responses. It has been reported to interact with, phosphorylate, and repress the activity of E47, a transcription factor involved in tissue-specific gene expression regulation.
