Background
This gene encodes a member of the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) family. VEGFR family members are receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) with an extracellular ligand-binding region containing seven immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane segment, and a cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domain. This protein binds VEGFR-A, VEGFR-B, and placental growth factor, playing a vital role in angiogenesis and vasculogenesis. It is expressed in vascular endothelial cells, placental trophoblast cells, and peripheral blood monocytes. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, including full-length transmembrane and soluble forms. Soluble isoforms are associated with pre-eclampsia onset.
