Cellular Localization Cytoplasm, perinuclear region, nucleus, axon, cytoplasmic vesicle, secretory vesicle, synaptic vesicle. When phosphorylated at Ser-19 shows nuclear distribution; when phosphorylated at Ser-31 and Ser-40 shows cytosolic distribution (By similarity). Expressed in dopaminergic axons and terminals.
Background The protein encoded by this gene catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to dopamine and is the rate-limiting enzyme in catecholamine synthesis. Plays a key role in adrenergic neuron physiology. Mutations are associated with autosomal recessive Segawa syndrome. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
