Background
The protein encoded by this gene participates in both the synthesis and degradation of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, a key regulatory molecule controlling glycolysis in eukaryotic cells. It possesses dual enzymatic activities:
- 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase activity, catalyzing the synthesis of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate
- Fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase activity, catalyzing its degradation
This enzyme regulates fructose-2,6-bisphosphate levels in the heart, while related enzymes control levels in the liver and muscle. It functions as a homodimer, and two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Jul 2008).
