Target Information
The 26S proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex composed of two major subcomplexes: the 20S core and the 19S regulator. The 20S core consists of four rings of 28 distinct subunits (two rings of seven alpha and two rings of seven beta subunits). The 19S regulator includes a base with ATPase and non-ATPase subunits and a lid with multiple non-ATPase subunits. Proteasomes are abundant in eukaryotic cells and function in ATP/ubiquitin-dependent peptide cleavage via a non-lysosomal pathway. The immunoproteasome variant processes class I MHC peptides. The PSMF1 gene encodes a protein that inhibits proteasome activation by the 11S and 19S regulators. Alternative transcript variants have been identified for this gene.
