Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. It induces final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and stimulates production of red cell-specific proteins such as hemoglobin. The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed on precursor cells and decreases with maturation. During fetal development, hepatocytes are the main source of EPO, while in adults it is produced primarily by kidney interstitial cells. EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and is also detected in lung and brain tissue. Recent studies suggest EPO may protect neuronal tissue and aid in repair processes.
