Collagen peptide is the hydrolyzed form of collagen type I. It is a fibrous protein found in the extracellular matrix of living cells. Hydrolysis of collagen makes it soluble in cold water and it loses its gelling property. Collagen peptides contain higher concentration of glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. These amino acids are very important in binding fibrous tissue. Since collagen peptide is a component of the extracellular matrix, treatment with collagen peptides improves the attachment and proliferation of many types of cells in culture. The attachment is mediated through the a2b1 integrin receptors present on the surface of the cells. Coating with hydrolyzed collagen has been found to be useful for culture of epithelial cells such as hepatocytes and keratinocytes, muscle cells and endothelial cells.
