Target Information
NFS1 (nitrogen fixation 1), also known as NIFS or IscS (cysteine desulfurase), is a member of the class V pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family. It localizes to the cytoplasm or mitochondrion depending on cytosolic pH.
NFS1 shows highest expression in heart and skeletal muscle, with lower expression in liver, brain, and pancreas. It catalyzes the removal of sulfur from cysteine to form alanine, supplying inorganic sulfur for iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters.
Fe-S clusters are essential cofactors in electron transfer, enzymatic catalysis (e.g., aconitase, dehydratases), and maintaining structural integrity in DNA repair enzyme endonuclease III.
