Target Information
Importin 8 is a 1037 amino acid nuclear protein with a RAN binding site. It belongs to the RAN-binding protein superfamily and shares an N-terminal sequence motif with importin-beta, which accounts for RAN GTP binding.
It binds to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) and functions as a transport carrier that mediates nuclear import of ribosomal proteins with a classical nuclear localization signal.
Importin 8 interacts with RANGTP and RANBP1 to inhibit GAP stimulation of the RAN GTPase, and along with transportin, assists in the nuclear import of SRP19.
