Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and various microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends, essential for mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport. Microtubules also facilitate cellular movement via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, microtubule minus ends are anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). GTP is essential for tubulin heterodimer formation and microtubule assembly. Microtubule polymerization is reversible, showing dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. Multiple tubulin genes encode tubulin classes in humans (6 genes).
