Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends, essential for mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport. Microtubules enable cellular movement via flagella and cilia and are anchored at microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs) in mammalian cells. GTP is required for tubulin heterodimer association and microtubule formation. Microtubule polymerization is reversible, exhibiting dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. In humans, six tubulin genes encode different tubulin classes.
