Target Information
Thromboxane synthase encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These enzymes are monooxygenases involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. Although classified as a cytochrome P450 based on sequence similarity, its functional role differs. This endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein catalyzes the conversion of prostaglandin H2 to thromboxane A2, a potent vasoconstrictor and platelet aggregation inducer. It plays a role in hemostasis, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
