Invitrogen™ CML Latex Beads, 4% w/v, 1.0 μm
Microspheres (also called latex beads or latex particles) are spherical particles in the colloidal size range formed from an amorphous polymer such as polystyrene. Because of the arrangement of polystyrene chains, the surface is highly hydrophobic, making these ideal for adsorption of materials such as proteins.
These carboxylate modified (CML) latex particles are produced by copolymerizing carboxylic acid-containing polymers. The resulting latex polymer particles have a highly charged, relatively hydrophilic, and somewhat “fluffy” surface layer.
CML particles are electrosterically stabilized and remain stable in electrolyte concentrations up to 1M univalent salt. They are negatively charged with a polyelectrolyte surface, and full ionization of carboxyl groups occurs at approximately pH 10, resulting in a hydrophilic latex surface.
