These genes encode evolutionarily conserved secreted proteins that function in the Notch receptor pathway, defining developmental boundaries during embryogenesis. Fringe proteins possess fucose-specific β-1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase activity, elongating O-linked fucose residues on Notch and modulating Notch signaling.
